The incidence and outcomes of urodynamic stress urinary incontinence in female patients with urethral diverticulum

Neurourology and Urodynamics Jul 11, 2019

Barratt R, et al. - In women undergoing transvaginal excision of a urethral diverticulum (UD) at the institution, researchers evaluated the incidence and management of urodynamic stress urinary incontinence (USUI). A prospective database, capturing patients undergoing 9-year urethral diverticulectomy (May 2007 to August 2016), focusing on USUI and subsequent management was reviewed. Data reported that preoperative USUI is present in 29% with UD. It was noted that postoperatively, 35.5% (n = 33) have pre-existing (19) or de novo (14) SUI, 60.6% (n = 20) of which resolves after 12 months of conservative management. USUI surgery is required in 13 (13.9%), and cure in 92.3%. This supports the practice of primarily excise UD and delay USUI surgery, thus avoiding the majority overtreatment.
