Population ageing and injurious falls among one million elderly people who used emergency medical services from 2010 to 2017 in Beijing, China: A longitudinal observational study

BMJ Open Jul 04, 2019

Zhao S, et al. - Via performing a longitudinal observational study based on Beijing emergency medical services (EMS) data from 2010 to 2017 (n=987,190), researchers determined the epidemiological characteristics of older people using EMS as a result of injurious falls, and the relationship between an aging population and injurious falls. A total of 8.38% of participants who used EMS had had a fall. The proportion of falls was highly prevalent in urban (8.62%) vs suburban (7.80%) regions. From September to November, peopled aged ≥ 60 years were more likely to use EMS due to injurious falls vs people who used EMS from December to February, and from 08:00 to 09:59 vs 00:00 to 01:59. Compared with the districts with a low proportion of the elderly population, old individuals in districts with high and medium proportions of an elderly population more likely utilized EMS due to injurious falls. Hence, an increase with age in the population of elderly people using EMS due to injurious falls was noted, which was positively associated with the proportion of the old population, in Beijing. Therefore, in a society with an aging population, taking care of aged people and limiting injurious falls should be one of the important issues to be worked on.
