Physical activity in long-term breast cancer survivors – A mixed-methods approach

The Breast Jul 04, 2019

Stalsberg R, et al. - Using a mixed-methods approach, researchers assessed the diversities of physical activity (PA) in breast cancer survivors (BCSs) across socioeconomic status (SES). In general and by SES, they investigated PA-levels, routines and experiences among BCSs. Overall, 250 BCSs were analyzed using questionnaires, activity logs, and interviews. In high-SES BCSs, more PA bouts were demonstrated by log-data, but no variation was evident in minutes/week across SES. Participants preferred neighborhood walking, while scheduled exercise was rare. According to interview-data, PA was medicating—normatively described and accompanied by unfulfilled ambitions—particularly in low-SES BCSs. Domestic PA was important in low-SES; however, high-SES BCSs described more energy.
