A pilot study to assess the safety and usefulness of combined transurethral endoscopic mucosal resection and en-bloc resection for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer

BMC Urology Jul 02, 2019

Hayashida Y, et al. - Thirty-nine patients with clinical non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC, one of the most common urological malignancies in men) who were treated using our original endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) and en-bloc resection technique, which involved excision of the tumor mass that protruded from the mucosa, using a polypectomy snare similar to that used for EMR, the researchers to exhibit the he safety and benefits of combined EMR and en-bloc resection in NMIBC patients. No adverse complications could be observed with EMR + en-bloc resection. In all specimens obtained, the pathologists were able to discover tumor invasiveness with significant certainty through the EMR + en-bloc procedure in comparison to TUR and the difference in the ease of diagnosis was statistically marked. Hence, for treating patients with NMIBC, EMR + en-bloc resection technique was concluded as achievable, secure, and helpful. It also aided in providing a more accurate pathological diagnosis.
