The protective effect of dietary phytosterols on cancer risk: A systematic meta-analysis
Journal of Oncology Jun 27, 2019
Jiang L, et al. – In this meta-analysis, researchers evaluated evidence from the literature on the relationship between dietary phytosterol intake and cancer risk. Via searching PUBMED, EMBASE, CNKI, and Wanfang, they reviewed eligible studies that focused on dietary total phytosterols, β-sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol, β-sitostanol, and campestanol, as well as their relationships with cancer risk. For the highest vs the lowest intake, they noted the relative risk of 0.63 for total phytosterols, 0.74 for β-sitosterol, 0.72 for campesterol, 0.83 for stigmasterol, 1.12 for β-sitostanol, and 0.77 for campestanol. According to results of the dose-response analysis performed, they noted a linear correlation for campesterol and a nonlinear correlation for total phytosterol intake. Findings thereby strengthened the hypothesis of inverse correlation of high phytosterol intake with the risk of cancer.
