Prognostic markers of lymphoma development in primary Sjögren syndrome

Lupus Jun 27, 2019

Retamozo S, et al. - The researchers assessed the prognostic markers of lymphoma development in primary Sjögren syndrome (a systemic autoimmune disease). Sjögren syndrome has been closely linked with a greater risk of lymphoma since 1978; a 10-44-fold increased risk of lymphoma in primary Sjögren syndrome patients vs healthy individuals was seen, which is greater than that reported for systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. The close correlation between lymphoma and Sjögren syndrome was clearly seen by the specific type of lymphoma in Sjögren syndrome patients, which was mainly low-grade B-cell lymphomas with primary extranodal involvement of the major salivary glands, with a primordial role of cryoglobulinemic-related markers. It was concluded that a greater number of risk factors recognized in an individual led to a greater lymphoma risk. Including cryoglobulin-related markers and EULAR Sjögren's syndrome disease activity index measurement in particular, a close follow-up of high-risk groups with longitudinal assessments of all known risk factors is needed.
