Predictors of work-related disability during early phases of breast cancer treatment

American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Jun 25, 2019

Brick R, et al. - In postmenopausal women with breast cancer, researchers analyzed the extent of work-related disability in comparison to healthy controls and assessed demographic and clinical correlates of work-related disability through an exploratory secondary analysis of a longitudinal study. A significantly higher percentage of at-work productivity loss was seen in participants with breast cancer vs the healthy control group. Moderate to strong association between cognitive-emotional symptoms and work-related disability at baseline was observed. Work-related disability and physical symptoms were moderately correlated at 6 months. Higher rates of work-related disability are seen with women with newly diagnosed breast cancer vs healthy counterparts. To parallel the change in symptoms leading to greater work-related disability and job cessation, health care providers should provide intervention.
