A retrospective study of the accuracy of template-guided vs freehand implant placement: A nonradiologic method

Alevizakos V, et al. - In this retrospective case study involving 20 adult patients, researchers assessed implant placement accuracy in inexperienced clinicians with use of a surgical guide template compared to the freehand method for preoperatively planned implant position. Inexperienced dental professionals (<20 implants placed) conducted oral implant therapy on qualified patients following software planning based on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Based on the surgical technique, two groups of patients were created: guided and freehand implant placement. Investigators observed that computer-aided planning and the use of CBCT image-based surgical guides can help inexperienced clinicians to place high accuracy implants. Depending on the implant position, no significant differences in implant placement accuracy were detected among groups.
