Zareini B, et al. - Researchers examined patients with established heart failure (HF) to determine the incidence and prognostic significance of new-onset diabetes in these subjects. This study was conducted with 104,522 HF patients stratified by history of diabetes. As a reference, patients without diabetes were included. The model was adjusted for age, sex, duration of HF, educational level and comorbidity. At baseline, diabetes was present in 21,216 (19%) patients, and new-onset diabetes development was reported in 8,164 (10%) over a mean follow-up of 3.9 years. The incidence of new-onset diabetes after the first HF hospitalization was estimated to be around 2% per year, increasing to 3% following 5 years of follow-up. An increased risk of mortality was reported in relation to new-onset diabetes vs HF patients with prevalent diabetes (intermediate risk) and HF patients without diabetes.
