Milling L, et al. - Among patients who received physician-administrated treatment for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, researchers focused on the extent and the pattern of chest compression-related injuries in 84 patients undergoing manual and mechanical chest compression and 353 patients with manual chest compression only. In this retrospective study, a strong association was evident between the use of mechanical chest compression as an adjunct to manual chest compression and potentially life-threatening visceral injuries. Findings also revealed a link between duration of chest compression and injury. They recommend mechanical chest compression only in situations where manual chest compression is unfeasible.
