Peery AF, et al. - In an analysis of data from 623 patients undergoing screening colonoscopies, researchers ascertained if anthropometric measures of obesity were correlated with colonic diverticulosis. Among men, no association was found between any measure of obesity and diverticulosis. No significant association was found between measures of central obesity and diverticulosis in women. In older age groups, diverticulosis prevalence did not differ by sex. According to this prospective study, obesity (BMI ≥30) significantly increased the risk of colonic diverticulosis in females but not in males. Compared with similar-age men, colonic diverticulosis was less prevalent in premenopausal-age women. These findings suggest that sex hormones may affect diverticulosis development.
