Shariq OA, et al. - Via this retrospective cohort study of 91,566 patients who underwent elective colectomy for colorectal cancer, researchers investigated how metabolic syndrome influnce short-term postoperative outcomes in these patients. Among these, 7603 (8.3%) had metabolic syndrome. Outcomes revealed an increased risk of 30-day postoperative renal complications, wound complications, and unplanned hospital readmissions among patients with metabolic syndrome undergoing elective surgery for colorectal cancer. Preoperative implementation of a multidisciplinary approach involving lifestyle modifications and pharmacologic interventions is recommended to improve the components of metabolic syndrome in these patients.
