Negative pressure wound therapy use to decrease surgical nosocomial events in colorectal resections (NEPTUNE): A randomized controlled trial

Annals of Surgery Jun 17, 2019

Murphy PB, et al. - Researchers examined how negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) influence surgical site infection (SSI) in primarily closed incision after open and laparoscopic-converted colorectal surgery. They performed a randomized, controlled trial assigning 300 patients undergoing elective open colorectal surgery to receive prophylactic NPWT or standard gauze dressing. Outcomes revealed no decrease in SSI rate in association to prophylactic use of NPWT on primarily closed incisions after open colorectal surgery when compared with standard gauze dressing.
