Podocin and uAPR are good biomarkers in cases of Focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis in pediatric renal biopsies

PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases Jun 17, 2019

de Morais Pereira LH, et al. - Via a study of renal biopsies of 50 children between 2 and 18 years old with diagnosis of minimal change disease (MCD), the contributors intended to evaluate the diagnostic potential of urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (uAPR) and glomerular proteins for the differentiation between MCD and focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). Positive and significant correlation between nephrin and podocin was found. Hence, it was concluded that podocin and uAPR were good markers for FSGS and to differentiate cases from MCD, reinforcing the theory of distinct glomerular diseases. Also, podocin and uAPR could be used as biomarkers in the routine analysis of renal biopsies in cases of podocytopathies when the lesion (sclerosis) is not sampled.
