Sensitivity of fine-needle aspiration and imaging modalities in the diagnosis of low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland

Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology Jun 16, 2019

Garrett SL, et al. - Researchers investigated fine-needle aspiration (FNA) and imaging modalities for their diagnostic accuracy for low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) of the parotid gland. They performed a retrospective chart review of 24 patients who had low-grade MEC on final pathology, with a total of 31 FNAs performed between them. For low-grade MEC FNA showed poor sensitivity. Due to its increased sensitivity for low-grade MEC when considering indeterminate results as positive, magnetic resonance imaging is suggested to an important diagnostic tool in the evaluation of salivary gland neoplasms. This renders confidence in the diagnosis of benign tumors and enables appropriate counseling of all options to the patient, including observation. They recommend considering imaging and low threshold of excision despite an inflammatory or benign FNA.
