Association between television viewing and early childhood overweight and obesity: A pair-matched case-control study in China

Hu J, et al. - This is the first pair-matched case-control study examining the relationship between television (TV) viewing and early childhood overweight/obese status as well as the age-based association. Participants in the study were 933 children who were 1 to 5 years of age that were individually matched on a 1:2 (cases: controls) ratio based on age and community. According to findings, childhood overweight/obese status only among 4- to 5-year-old kids was positively linked to longer TV viewing time. Watching TV can result in kids becoming overweight/obese by increasing exposure to unhealthy food advertising or by influencing unhealthy dietary habits. The results from this research can assist define the population that is likely to become overweight/obese due to TV viewing and enforce the policy of action.
