MitraClip improves cardiopulmonary exercise test in patients with systolic heart failure and functional mitral regurgitation

ESC Heart Failure Jun 16, 2019

Benito-González T, et al. - Researchers examined patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction who are potentially candidates for heart transplantation or destination left ventricular assist device, to assess alterations in cardiopulmonary exercise test following percutaneous mitral valve repair with MitraClip. They excluded cases with preserved or mid-range left ventricular ejection fraction (>40%), advanced age (>75 years old), or severe co-morbidities (end-stage organ damage). Eleven patients (male, 72.7%; median age, 67 years old) were asked to undergo treadmill exercise testing with respiratory gas exchange analysis within the month before the procedure and at 6 month follow-up. An enhancement in cardiopulmonary performance was seen in relation to percutaneous mitral valve repair with MitraClip in patients with systolic heart failure and secondary mitral regurgitation.
