Cohen R, et al. - Via recruiting English-speaking women (aged 13–24 years) from a family planning clinic serving clients <25 years old, researchers outlined the rate of discontinuation of intrauterine devices (IUDs) and contraceptive implants among adolescents and young women, the extent to which discontinuation is predicted by baseline factors, reasons for discontinuation and subsequent contraceptive initiation. Seven hundred seventy-five young women completed surveys and initiated IUD or implant use from 2011 to 2013. Pain (IUD) and bleeding (implant) were the most common reasons for discontinuation. After discontinuing their original method, most participants initiated alternate contraception. According to findings, adolescents and young females initiating an IUD or implant make discontinuation choices based on weighing elevated contraceptive efficacy with other reproductive health values and preferences.
