A 14 year retrospective analysis of indication and outcomes of autologous haematopoietic cell transplantation in regional Queensland- A single centre experience

Internal Medicine Journal Jun 16, 2019

Hamilton E, et al. - In order to check safety standards, researchers sought to characterize the activity and results of autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplants (HSCTs) at The Townsville Hospital [a tertiary hospital in North Queensland with one of the largest regional transplant centres in Australia] from 2003 to 2017. For this single centre, retrospective, observational study, patient level data was gathered including demographics, frequency and indication for transplant, conditioning, current clinical status, and cause of death. In 286 patients, with a median age of 58 years (range 14-71years), there were 319 autologous HSCTs. In the multiple myeloma cohort, the median PFS was 3.3 years. According to findings, the Townsville Hospital transplant centre gives an important transplant service in regional Queensland, with results similar to national data. As a cause of death, the authors reported a relatively high rate of a second malignancy.
