Setter NW, et al. - Via involving patients older than 14 years, hospitalized from 2010 to 2016 due to SARI by viral infection, and who were submitted to respiratory virus testing, researchers assessed the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) score and possible predictors of mortality in hospitalized patients with Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI), striving to test if the CCI is a valid in-hospital prognostic indicator. Chronic pulmonary disease and HIV were the most recurrent comorbidities. The comorbidity scores used to evaluate the risk of mortality in hospitalized SARI patients showed poor outcomes, but HIV infection was considered a severity marker. However, in order to compose a score system that allows us to specifically assess the risk of mortality in SARI patients, other factors should be considered.
