Noel JA, et al. - Via a population-based, retrospective matched cohort study of 20,020 matched individuals of advanced age, the contributors intended to assess the risk of hospitalization for adverse gastrointestinal (GI) events associated with sodium polystyrene sulfonate use. Through the study, the most common type of GI injury observed was intestinal ischemia/thrombosis. Therefore, a significant association among the use of sodium polystyrene sulfonate and the higher risk of hospitalization for serious adverse GI events was concluded by the authors. Furthermore, caution with the ongoing use of sodium polystyrene sulfonate is suggestive.
