Ten-year fracture risk by FRAX and osteoporotic fractures in patients with systemic autoimmune diseases

Lupus Jun 14, 2019

Lai EL, et al. - Given the universal utilization of the Fracture Risk Assessment Tool (FRAX) for the purpose of fracture risk assessment, researchers compared the applicability of FRAX for autoimmune disease patients. In this retrospective study, they identified patients with any osteoporotic fractures in total, 802 patients [451 rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, 233 systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients, and 118 primary Sjögren syndrome (pSS) patients] with bone mineral density (BMD) tests. Then they calculated Taiwan-specific FRAX with and without BMD. In this work, accurate prediction of fracture probability in RA patients was made using current FRAX, but not in SLE and pSS patients. Findings suggest the possible utility of RA-imputed FRAX risk scores as a temporary substitute for SLE and pSS patients.
