Prehospital cardiopulmonary resuscitation with manual or mechanical chest compression: A study of compression-induced injuries

Milling L, et al. - In patients subjected to either mechanical and/or manual cardiac compression, researchers focused on the extent and the pattern of chest compression-associated injuries in this retrospective study. For this purpose, they analyzed all prehospital discharge reports, in-hospital records, and autopsy reports via a manual review. From 2015 to 2017, all patients who had out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and who received physician-administrated treatment for that in the Region of Southern Denmark, were included. Findings revealed a strong association of mechanical chest compression as an adjunct to manual chest compression, with potentially life-threatening visceral injuries. A link was evident between duration of chest compression and injury. Applying mechanical chest compression only in situations where manual chest compression is unfeasible, is recommended in this study.
