Crim J, et al. - In this investigation, researchers sought to establish a correlation between radiographic findings and gross and microscopic histopathological findings in order to evaluate the usefulness of radiography in preoperative evaluation of hip arthroplasty. Reports of radiology and pathology from 953 consecutive femoral head resections were evaluated to determine the correlation of results of radiography and pathology as used in routine clinical practice. Findings from radiography are a reliable measure of osteoarthritis severity. This is essential because prior trials have shown that arthroplasty is less probable to benefit patients with no or mild osteoarthritis. Further investigation is warranted before proceeding to arthroplasty if evidence of moderate or severe osteoarthritis is not present on radiographs.
