Beshara A, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study (2011-2013) within the Clalit Health Services, Israel, researchers assessed time to colonoscopy following a positive guaiac fecal occult blood test (gFOBT) result, as well as its link with the risk of overall colorectal cancer (CRC) and advanced-stage disease at diagnosis. With a positive gFOBT result and follow-up colonoscopies within 24 months, patients between 50-74 years old were included. For a follow up of 12-24 months, higher risks for any CRC and advanced stage disease were reported, compared with colonoscopy follow-up within 0-3 months. At ten months, an increased risk starts for right-sided cancer (N=194). A result of 3-6 positive fields was significantly related diagnosis of cancer and advanced stage disease. It is justifiable to promote an early uptake of colonoscopy and to target those with 10 to 24 months delay and a 3-6 positive fields.
