Associations of atopic dermatitis and asthma with child behaviour: Results from the PROBIT cohort

Clinical & Experimental Allergy Jun 13, 2019

Ballardini N, et al. - In this secondary cohort analysis of the Promotion of Breastfeeding Intervention Trial (PROBIT), researchers estimated the magnitude of links of atopic dermatitis (AD) in infancy, and symptoms of asthma and AD at 6.5 years, with child behaviour at 6.5 years. A total of 17,046 infants were enrolled at birth in PROBIT and were followed up at 6.5 years (n = 13 889). Data on infantile AD were gathered by study paediatricians, at repeated follow-up assessments during the first year of life. At 6.5 years, skin prick tests were performed by the paediatricians and parents were asked to report asthma and AD symptoms during the prior year. A higher risk for concomitant hyperactivity/inattention and emotional disorder was found in children with AD symptoms. Also, a higher risk of having concomitant emotional problems was found in children with asthma symptoms. However, childhood behaviours were not predicted by AD during infancy.
