External fixation in the emergency department for pilon and unstable ankle fractures

Journal of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Jun 13, 2019

Shah KN, et al. - Ninety-six patients the average age of patients was 47 years were studied in order to determine the external fixator (ex-fix) application in the emergency department (ED) in comparison with that placed in the operating room (OR). Out of 96 patients, 53 were men. Thirty-three patients were noted who had the ex-fix placed in the OR and 63 patients had it placed in the ED. Postsurgical complications were seen in 6 of 33 patients and 8 of 63 patients in the ED ex-fix group and in the OR ex-fix group respectively. However, no statistically significant differences could be found in postsurgical complications or ex-fix revision rates for either of the groups. Results indicated that the application of uniplanar ex-fix could be safely carried out in the ED.
