Nam GE, et al. - Among 167,876 patients (aged ≥ 40 years) with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes, researchers explored the connection between baseline body mass index, percentage weight change, and the risk of dementia via using the South Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Health Screening Cohort database. During follow-up, 2,563 incident dementia cases were identified. In patients with new-onset type 2 diabetes, a lower baseline body mass index was linked to increased risks of all-cause dementia and Alzheimer disease. Weight loss or weight gain following diabetes diagnosis was linked to an increased risk of all-cause dementia. An increased risk of Alzheimer disease was related to weight loss, concluded the investigators.
