Individualized decision aid for diverse women with lupus nephritis (IDEA-WON): A randomized controlled trial

PLoS Medicine Jun 09, 2019

Singh JA, et al. – Via conducting a US multicenter, open-label, randomized, controlled trial involving 301 adult women with lupus nephritis, researchers assessed the effectiveness of decision support for immunosuppressive therapy in this patient population. The study sample largely consisted of women from racial/ethnic minority backgrounds with low socioeconomic status who were randomized to either an individualized decision aid or a lupus pamphlet. Key study limitations included short follow-up, lack of clinical outcomes, including medication adherence, and the exclusion of men. Compared with usual care, an individualized decision aid was found to be more effective in reducing decisional conflict for the selection of immunosuppressive medications in women with lupus nephritis. Of note, women who used the decision aid reported feeling less doubt about their medication choice vs women who received the lupus pamphlet.
