Telomere length and frailty in older adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Carvalho ACA, et al. - Because telomere shortening could be a potentially valuable biomarker of human ageing and age-associated morbidity and mortality, researchers analyzed evidence from nine studies (n=10,079 in total) reporting telomere length in frail and non-frail older adults. They also assessed the link between telomere length and frailty index score. Frail (n=355) vs non-frail (n=1,894) older adults had shorter telomeres. In Hispanic countries, telomere length differed significantly between frail and non-frail older adults. Analysis of 8,244 people revealed a significant but weak link between telomere length and frailty index. Overall, the investigators concluded that telomere length may be not a meaningful biomarker for frailty.
