Ohta N, et al. - In this retrospective analysis of pediatric patients with upper urinary tract infection, researchers assessed soluble ST2 levels for their ability to serve as biomarkers of subsequent renal scarring. They examined 28 cases with (n = 14) and without (n = 14) renal scarring as well as 13 controls. The scar group vs non-scar group had significantly higher serum soluble ST2 levels. With a sensitivity of 92.9% and specificity of 64.3%, measurements of serum soluble ST2 enabled discrimination between the non-scar and scar groups with an area under the curve of 0.79. In this study, a possible utility of admission serum soluble ST2 levels as a biomarker of subsequent renal scarring was suggested in pediatric patients with upper urinary tract infection.
