Association between dietary iron and zinc intake and development of ulcerative colitis: A case–control study in Japan

Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology May 27, 2019

Kobayashi Y, et al. - Researchers conducted this multicenter, hospital-based case-control study to concentrate on the dietary intake of trace elements (ie, iron, zinc, magnesium, and copper) and their relationships with ulcerative colitis (UC) development. Participants in the study were 127 newly diagnosed patients with UC and 171 age-matched and sex-matched hospital controls. Findings suggested that high iron intake has an effect on UC's development. A high intake of zinc, on the other hand, has a protective effect on UC development. There was no significant association with UC with magnesium and copper intakes.
