U.S. national trends in the management and outcomes of constrictive pericarditis: 2005-2014
Canadian Journal of Cardiology May 25, 2019
Mori M, et al. - Researchers used the National Inpatient Sample dataset (2005-2014) to analyze trends in the management strategy and features and outcomes of patients with constrictive pericarditis in the US. They carried out descriptive analyses to compare patient features and in-hospital death rates between surgically and medically managed cohorts. They reported the prevalence of constrictive pericarditis continued to be stable at 9-10 cases/million from 2005 to 2014. Patients were infrequently managed surgically. Surgical management was more likely to be utilized for younger and less comorbid patients. The persisting challenge of this complex entity was highlighted by the increasing use of cardiopulmonary bypass without a change in operative mortality.
