Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 and risk of type 2 diabetes among Japanese adults: The Hitachi Health Study

Clinical Nutrition May 24, 2019

Akter S, et al. - Using conditional logistic regression analysis, researchers explored the connection between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25[OH]D3) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk in Japanese people. This investigation was carried out in a biomarker cohort of 4,754 employees who had attended a comprehensive health checkup and donated a blood sample. After adjustment for known risk factors other than body mass index, the investigators found that serum 25(OH)D3 was significantly and inversely linked to T2D risk. In addition, progression from prediabetes to T2D was about 37% lower than in the lowest quartile in the highest quartile of 25(OH)D3. According to findings from this nested case-control study, higher circulating 25(OH)D3 was connected with lower T2D risk, and this link was stronger among those whose blood was taken during the darker season and among those with prediabetes.
