Malek M, et al. - Researchers analyzed 170 patients with morbid obesity who have referred to surgery clinic of Firoozgar Hospital regarding their dietary intakes and their associated biochemical parameters, prior to bariatric surgery. The patients had a mean age of 37.4 ± 10.17 years and had the mean and standard deviation of the BMI and EBW values of 45.75 ± 6.49 kg/m and 47.6 ± 13.74 kg, respectively. As per findings, patients with obesity usually experience micronutrient deficiencies, such as vitamin D, iron, and vitamin B12 despite reporting excess intakes of energy. Complicated biochemical disorders like impaired glucose metabolism and dyslipidemia may accompany these deficiencies. Therefore, they recommend close nutritional monitoring of bariatric surgery candidates before and after their surgical operations.
