Merkler AE, et al. - In this cross-sectional study of ICELAND MI (a cohort substudy of the Age, Gene/Environment Susceptibility-Reykjavik Study conducted in Iceland), researchers ascertained if cerebral infarction is associated with unrecognized myocardial infarction (MI), defined as cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) evidence of MI without a history of clinically evident MI. They included 925 candidates (aged 67 to 93 years) who had both brain MRI and late gadolinium enhancement cardiac MRI. An association was found between unrecognized MI and cerebral infarction in a population-based sample, suggesting a novel risk factor for cardiac embolism and cerebral infarction may be unrecognized MI.
