Behçet’s disease presentations and care outcomes in a tertiary hospital in south-western Saudi Arabia

Al Zahrani FM, et al. - Researchers studied 47 patients (26 men and 21 women) with Behçet's disease who attended the Rheumatology Department at Asser Central Hospital, Saudi Arabia, in order to assess the clinical presentations of Behçet's disease. Similar to other Middle-Eastern countries, south-western Saudi Arabia had more males affected with Behçet's disease. Main clinical manifestations comprised oral ulcers in 89.4% (42/47), genital ulcers in 80.9% (38), ocular complications in 55.3% (26/47), arthralgia in 55.3% (26/47), arthritis in 31.9% (15/47), neurological complications in 36% (17/47), gastrointestinal involvement in 34% (16), pulmonary complication in 17% (8/47), cutaneous lesions in the form of skin pustules in 31.9% of cases and erythema only in 4.3% of patients. In addition, 66.6% of patients had deep venous thrombosis. Using oral corticosteroids and other immunosuppressive drugs, improvement was achieved in nearly 96% of patients.
