Zilberberg MD, et al. - In this population study, researchers assessed the annual volume of invasive aspergillosis (IA)-associated hospitalizations in the US by utilizing aggregated data accessible on the interactive website from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project Network (HCUPnet). From 2004 to 2013, an increase was noted in the age-adjusted number of annual hospitalizations with IA, which raised from 35,968 cases to 51,870, respectively. They reported that the South contributed the plurality of the cases (40%), and the Northeast the fewest (17%). They reported that IA-related hospitalizations in the US showed a substantial volume and rate of growth between 2004 and 2013, as well as were associated with an increase in mortality and high costs. These findings imply that IA could be an attractive target for intensive preventive efforts.
