Intra-oral single site comparisons of periodontal and peri-implant microbiota in health and disease
Clinical Oral Implants Research May 23, 2019
Yu XL, et al. - In this investigation, researchers described the single-site subgingival and submucosal microbiomes of implant-rehabilitated, partially dentate 18 Chinese subjects presenting with both periodontitis and peri-implantitis. In each subject, subgingival/submucosal plaque samples were collected from 4 clinically distinguished sites: peri-implantitis submucosa (DI), periodontal pocket (DT), clinically-healthy (unaffected) peri-implant submucosa (HI), and clinically-healthy (unaffected) subgingival sulcus (HT). According to results, 26 phyla and 5,726 Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs) were identified. The periodontal and peri-implant microbiota composition of species (OTU) varied widely between subjects. The inter-subject variations in the composition of the subgingival/submucosal microbiome outweighed the differences observed between implants and tooth sites, or between peri-implant/periodontal sites that were diseased vs healthy (unaffected).
