Chiou A, et al. - Researchers examined how comorbid hyperuricemia and gout is associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) disease measures, RA treatments, and survival in this study involving nearly 2,000 patients with RA. They categorized participants from a longitudinal RA study by the presence of gout and serum urate (sUA) status. Among participants with Ra, sUA concentrations > 6.8 mg/dL were reported in 17% and gout was diagnosed in 6.1%. Enrollment sUA or gout was identified to have no significant associations with RA disease activity or treatment, with the exception that those with gout more frequently received sulfasalazine and less frequently received nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. In addition, this population displayed strong associations of hyperuricemia with cardiovascular disease mortality, which may be spurred by excess comorbidity.
