Lindner AK, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers examined 55 patients with penile squamous cell carcinoma to compare recurrence patterns and survival between organ-sparing surgery (OSS) vs (total or partial) penectomy, with a mean follow-up of 63.7 months. A total of 26 patients (47.2%) underwent OSS and 29 cases (52.8%) had partial or total penectomy. The penectomy group consisted of significantly older patients with a higher rate of advanced tumor stage. After OSS vs penectomy, the estimated local recurrence rate was 42.3% vs 10.3%, respectively. Although a higher local recurrence rate was observed in relation to OSS vs penectomy, OSS did not negatively influence overall and metastasis-free survival.
