Should women with a BRCA1/2 mutation aged 60 and older be offered intensified breast cancer screening?: A cost-effectiveness analysis

The Breast May 01, 2019

Phi XA, et al. – In a cohort of older women with BRCA1/2 mutation, researchers determined the cost-efficacy of intensified breast cancer screening by comparing three alternative strategies: alternating annual mammography and MRI for women with dense breasts only, addition of annual MRI for women with dense breasts only, and addition of annual MRI for all women. They used annual mammography as a reference. Findings revealed that only alternating annual MRI and mammography for BRCA2 mutation carriers and dense breasts aged 60–75 yeras than annual mammography may be cost effective. They found that none of the alternative strategies were cost-effective for BRCA1 mutation carriers vs the next best strategy.
