Serum lactate as a predictor of neurologic outcome in ED patients with acute carbon monoxide poisoning

Jung JW, et al. - A total of 432 subjects with acute carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning admitted to the emergency department of Samsung Changwon Hospital were analyzed by researchers to evaluate the predictive risk factor of neurologic outcome in such cases. Participants were divided into two groups: good neurologic outcome and poor neurologic outcome. In the good neurological outcome group compared with the poor neurological outcome group, the investigators observed a statistical difference in terms of exposure time, WBC, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), CK-MB, troponin-I, creatinine kinase, NSE, lactate, CO-Hb, and Glasgow Coma Score (GCS). The early predictors of the development of poor neurologic outcome were NSE, lactate, and GCS. In all, initial serum lactate level may correlate with the patient neurologic outcomes and may be of clinical utility as a prognostic factor.
