Chronic tension-type headache and coping strategies in adolescents: A qualitative interview study

Physiotherapy Research International Apr 26, 2019

Skogvold L, et al. - Using a qualitative design with semistructured individual interviews, researchers investigated which strategies adolescents use to cope with chronic tension-type headache in everyday life. The study consisted of a strategic sample of 17 adolescents and young adults (aged 14–19 years) with tension-type headache. Using systematic text condensation, transcripts were analyzed. Findings supported the importance of having a good structure during the day to deal with headache in daily life, particularly with respect to regular meals and sufficient sleep. Both problem-focused active strategies and passive emotion-focused strategies were used by study participants to deal with their daily headache. These participants discovered strategies that helped them cope with their headache and its consequences through exploration and awareness of the types of behavior that worked and did not work.
