Relation of blood pressure in childhood to self-reported hypertension in adulthood: The International Childhood Cardiovascular Cohort Consortium

Hypertension Apr 19, 2019

Urbina EM, et al. - Researchers investigated if childhood blood pressure (BP) can predict adult hypertension by using logistic regression. They estimated BP tracking in individuals with BP measured in childhood and adulthood (N=5,035). A 29% prevalence of hypertension was reported. White and female individuals were less likely to report adult hypertension. Higher BP and adiposity by 10 years of age and abnormal lipids and glucose by age 16 years were more likely to be seen among participants with adult hypertension. Lifestyle intervention aimed at preventing future sustained hypertension-related cardiovascular disease may be required in people with an increase in systolic BP and body mass index percentile from childhood to adolescence.
