Serum triglycerides as a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases in type 2 diabetes mellitus: A systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective studies

Cardiovascular Diabetology Apr 19, 2019

Ye X, et al. - In this meta-analysis of 31 studies identified from bibliographic databases, researchers examined the association of triglyceride (TG) levels with cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). They estimated pooled estimates of the most fully adjusted risk ratios (RR) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals based on TG categories, unit TG, and logarithm of TG for CVD by using a random-effects model with inverse variance weighting. Overall 132,044 patients with T2DM and 10,733 incident cardiovascular events were included. In type 2 diabetic patients, elevated TG concentrations cannot serve as an independent marker for an increased risk of cardiovascular events; however, higher serum TG levels tend to be associated with increased risks of CVD.
