Lin M, et al. - In this cross-sectional study conducted China, researchers examined the independent associations and potential mechanisms of Fetuin-B and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in a cohort of 1,072 Chinese adults who had serum Fetuin-B test and hepatic ultrasonography scanning. They defined CKD as estimated glomerular filtration rate < 60 mL/min/1.73 m² and/or the presence of albuminuria. According to findings, inducing insulin resistance could result in Fetuin-B linking NAFLD to CKD. Data also revealed an independent contribution of NAFLD to the pathogenesis of CKD; mechanisms involved were multiple besides of metabolic/insulin resistance syndrome.
