Towiwat P, et al. - Researchers comprehensively characterized the anatomical pathology of tissues affected by gout in the first-time systematic review of gout anatomy. Specifically, they detailed the macroscopic, light microscopic (immunohistochemical), and electron microscopic appearance of the disease. A total of 417 articles describing the microscopic or macroscopic appearances of gout in human tissue were included. In line with the clinical presentation of gout, most studies describing the anatomical pathology of gout reported involvement of musculoskeletal structures, with deposition of monosodium urate crystal and tophus described as the most common lesions.
