DeSantis CE, et al. – In order to monitor cancer statistics for African American/black individuals in the United States, researchers assessed the estimated number of new cancer cases and deaths for this demographic. They also analyzed the most recent data on cancer incidence, mortality, survival, screening, and risk factors using the National Cancer Institute, the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries, and the National Center for Health Statistics. In all, they estimated about 200,000 new cases of cancer and 70,000 cancer deaths to occur among black individuals in 2019. From 2006 to 2015, they noted a more rapid decline in the overall cancer incidence rates among black vs white men (2.4% vs 1.7% per year), largely due to a faster drop in lung cancer. The investigators indicated the necessity of expanding access to high-quality prevention, early detection, and treatment for continued progress in reducing disparities for all Americans.
