Mediterranean alcohol-drinking pattern, low to moderate alcohol intake and risk of atrial fibrillation in the predimed study

Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Mar 27, 2019

Bazal P, et al. - Researchers analyzed nearly 7,500 candidates to examine the relationship between adherence to a Mediterranean alcohol-drinking pattern (MADP) and atrial fibrillation (AF) incidence. They used a validated frequency food questionnaire to measure alcohol consumption. They categorized the participants as non-drinkers, adherents to MADP (10-30g/d in males and 5-15 g/day in females, preferably red wine consumption with low spirits consumption), low-moderate drinkers (< 30 g/day men and < 15 g/day females), and heavy drinkers. They found no relationship between alcohol consumption and AF incidence among low-moderate drinkers, adherents to MADP, or heavy drinkers vs non-drinkers.
